The Basics: What is BuddhistConnect?

BuddhistConnect is the first online network for the Buddhist community that provides a truly trustworthy network for meeting friends, finding romantic partners, and making business contacts. You don't need to be religious to join—it's a network of friends with similar interests and values.

This is not a community of strangers. It's a place where you can refer your friends, make new contacts, and meet new people through people you already know. It's the closest thing to a live network of friends and acquaintances that you can have online.

Find a roommate!... Find your romantic match!... or meet your new best friend! Join us, and watch your world grow.

What's Buddhism got to do with it?

Buddhism is a rich and varied tradition, but its most basic insights are simple, practical, and helpful. The Buddhist path offers many ways of enabling us to open up and experience our relationships with others in fresh ways. Buddhist teachings suggest that often this involves letting go of complicated mental patterns that have been holding us back.

Buddhism also speaks of kleshas, the negative qualities of the mind. As the highly respected Zen teacher Mu Soeng says, "A very human experience, regardless of who we are, is to suffer because we have negative qualities in the mind. We have anger, we have frustration. It's the purification of these negative qualities in the mind that is the basic building block of Buddhist thought."

In relationships, sometimes this takes the form of blaming others or putting them in the wrong. Many Buddhist teachings suggest that when we do this, we're really doing it to ourselves. As the well-known Buddhist teacher and author Pema Chödrön puts it, "It's difficult to hear that what we rejected out there, is what we reject in ourselves, and what we reject in ourselves, is what we are going to reject out there. But that, in a nutshell, is how it works."

Relationships are complicated and there are no silver bullets... but simple Buddhist practices can be a building block towards transforming relationships with people one has known for a long time — friends, family members, co-workers or with new people who are coming into our lives... .
